Counterfeit Gold Bars: How They Work and How to Protect Yourself

The gold bar sitting on the dealer's counter looks right. It has the correct weight, the correct dimensions, the right stamp, and it came in convincing packaging with what appears to be a genuine assay card. It's also worth approximately 4% of its marked value, because its core is tungsten with a thin gold shell.
Counterfeit gold products — bars, coins, and rounds — have grown more sophisticated over the past several years, driven by higher gold prices (which increase the profit per fake), better manufacturing technology (which makes fakes harder to detect visually), and the expansion of online and peer-to-peer precious metals markets where buyers can't physically inspect products before purchasing.
The CFTC has specifically warned about counterfeit gold as a category of precious metals fraud. The methods range from crude to alarmingly sophisticated, and the most common consumer-level counterfeits exploit a physical property that makes gold uniquely vulnerable to a specific type of forgery.
Why tungsten
Gold's density is 19.32 g/cm³. Tungsten's density is 19.25 g/cm³ — a match close enough that a tungsten core plated with real gold will pass a weight-and-dimension check. This is the fundamental vulnerability: unlike silver (which has no common metal of similar density), gold has a near-perfect density twin in a metal that costs a fraction of its price.
A tungsten-core gold bar looks right, feels right in the hand, weighs right on a scale, and measures right with calipers. The gold shell is real gold — it will pass an acid test, a surface XRF scan, and a visual inspection. The counterfeit is not in the surface; it's in the interior.
How counterfeits enter the market
Counterfeit gold products reach consumers through several channels. Direct online purchases from unverified sellers — particularly through general marketplaces, social media, and peer-to-peer platforms — are the highest-risk channel. Counterfeit bars and coins with convincing packaging and forged assay cards are manufactured primarily in China and sold globally at prices just below the market rate.
Secondary market purchases — buying from another individual, an estate sale, a pawn shop, or an unfamiliar dealer — carry higher risk than purchases from established, full-service dealers who source directly from mints and refiners. The chain of custody matters: each intermediary between the refiner and the buyer is a point where a counterfeit can enter the supply chain.
Some counterfeits are sophisticated enough to have passed through legitimate dealer channels undetected, though this is rare among established dealers with proper verification equipment.
How to verify authenticity
No single test is definitive for all counterfeits, but the combination of several tests makes detection reliable.
Ultrasonic thickness testing is the gold standard for detecting tungsten-core counterfeits. An ultrasonic gauge sends sound waves through the bar and measures the speed at which they travel. Gold and tungsten have different acoustic velocities — sound travels through gold at approximately 3,240 m/s and through tungsten at approximately 5,180 m/s. A tungsten-core bar will produce a dramatically different reading than a solid gold bar of the same dimensions. Established dealers use this test as routine verification.
Specific gravity testing (also called a water displacement test) measures the density of the entire bar, not just the surface. While tungsten's density is close to gold's, it's not identical, and a careful specific gravity measurement can detect the difference — particularly in larger bars where the volume difference is amplified. This test can be done at home with a precision scale and a container of water.
Sigma Metalytics testing uses electromagnetic conductivity to assess the internal composition of a bar or coin without damaging it. The device measures how electrical signals propagate through the metal, which differs between gold and tungsten. This is increasingly common at dealer counters and coin shows.
XRF (X-ray fluorescence) testing identifies the elemental composition of the surface — it will confirm that the surface is gold, and to what purity. However, standard handheld XRF units only penetrate a fraction of a millimeter, so they cannot detect a tungsten core beneath a gold shell. XRF is useful for confirming purity and detecting base-metal fakes, but insufficient on its own for tungsten detection.
How to protect yourself
Buy from established dealers who source from recognized mints and refiners, verify incoming inventory, and can demonstrate their testing procedures. Ask the dealer what verification methods they use. A dealer who uses ultrasonic or Sigma testing and can explain the process is demonstrating a level of quality control that protects both you and their reputation.
Avoid peer-to-peer purchases of gold bars from unknown sellers, regardless of how convincing the packaging or pricing appears. If the price is below market — even slightly — ask why. A legitimate seller with genuine gold has no reason to offer a discount.
For significant purchases, request the bar's serial number and verify it against the refiner's registry. Major refiners like PAMP, Valcambi, and the Royal Canadian Mint maintain registries of their products. A bar whose serial number doesn't match the refiner's records is either counterfeit or has been modified.
If you're buying from a secondary source — an estate, auction, or unfamiliar dealer — have the product independently tested before completing the purchase. The cost of an ultrasonic test is trivial relative to the cost of discovering you own a tungsten bar.
The bottom line
Counterfeit gold is a real risk that grows in proportion to gold's price. The counterfeits that matter — tungsten-core bars with real gold shells — are designed to pass the tests that most buyers know to perform. The tests that catch them — ultrasonic thickness, specific gravity, Sigma conductivity — are the ones worth understanding and insisting on. Buy from dealers who use them, and if you're buying from anyone else, test before you trust.
